Toward Sunday

This week we continue our worship series called Christian? It’s Complicated. The cultural connotations of being Christian can make it a struggle to claim our faith in public.  Some of us become secretive about our church and faith. This five-week worship series will invite reflection on the complexities of claiming Christian faith in our day.

Outline for Christian? It’s Complicated.
October 4: rooted in Grace.  it’s complicated.  Mark 1:9-11
October 11: growing in faith.  It’s complicated.  Mark 10:17-31
October 18: reaching in love.  It’s complicated. Mark 10:35-45
October 25: Baptism. Mark 10:46-52/Galatians 3:27-29

November 1: Deep Commitments Mark 12:28-34

We long to root our lives in Grace & grow in faith at The Table.  We root our lives in Grace through worship, personal/family prayer, and by practicing Christian disciplines to stay in love with God.  We hope to grow in faith through Kitchen Tables, by searching Scripture, by giving generously, by witnessing to God’s love in the world.

How have you done over the last year in terms of rooting your life in Grace & growing in faith?

We will make Deep Commitments to God and our community of faith in worship on Sunday, November 1.  Here is a link to our online Deep Commitment Card.  We encourage you to prayerfully consider how you want to set goals to root your life in Grace, grow in faith, reach in love and give generously in the coming year.

Read Mark 10:17-31.

Charles L Campbell writes, Jesus loves the rich man; he does not view the man as intentionally evil. Indeed, the man appears to be faithful in many ways, having kept the commandments from his youth. Rather than condemning the “sin” of the rich man, Jesus confronts the man with his weakness, his captivity to possessions that prevents him from living into the full life of the kingdom. Jesus here names the “power” that holds the man captive and invites the man to step into freedom (Feasting on the Word: Year B, Volume 4).

What is preventing you from living into the full life of the kingdom right now?  What “powers” might Jesus see in your life that hold you captive? What might be the next step into freedom that Jesus would call you to take?
