NURSERY ASSISTANT

STATUS: HOURLY

  • 4.5 – 5.0 hours per week on Sunday mornings during Sunday morning church services—approximately 8:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. 
  • Occasional additional hours contingent on scheduling of additional church events (usually scheduled on weekday evenings) that may require child care.

PAY  This is a paid position on an hourly basis:  $17/hour.

GENERAL PURPOSE 

The nursery assistant is a dependable, patient, attentive individual with an understanding of the childhood development process. This position will assist the Child Care Coordinator in providing safe, secure and nurturing care to children 0-4 years of age in a comfortable clean environment at church while promoting positive prosocial behaviors.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISION  The Nursery Assistant reports to and is supervised by the Child Care Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides age-appropriate child care which includes: meeting the needs and safety of the children, maintaining a clean work and play space, cultivating the love of learning through quality engagement, stories, games, and the various types of play.
  • Helps children to the bathroom, giving them space and reassurance that help is there IF NEEDED. A hands off approach is preferred, as most are potty trained.
  • Resolves conflicts between children by approaching the situation quickly and calmly,     minimizing harm from hurtful language and/or behavior. Helps children verbalize their feelings, praises resolution, and continues to observe. 
  • Communicates clearly with students, parents, co- pastors, volunteers, and employees at The Table.
  • Practices and models safety, including COVID safety protocol (handwashing and hand sanitizing).
  • Assists Child Care Coordinator with set up and clean up of the nursery.
  • Independently supervises and cares for children while the Child Care Coordinator supervises child check-in and check-out procedures.

OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT  Authorize The Table UMC to perform a background check (required of all staff and volunteers who interact with children and youth). 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  Kids have a lot of energy! This job requires physical stamina, bending, stooping, lifting, etc. in order to fully attend to the needs of the children.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES 

  • Experience working with young children.
  • Experience working with children ages 0-4 in group settings is preferred.
  • Completion of coursework in an early childhood education program is preferred.
  • Ability to implement proper decision-making, listening skills, multi-tasking skills, social perceptiveness, and ability to quickly adapt.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to cultivate healthy, motivating relationships with others.
