Order of Worship

Linda’s message invites reflection on the history and meaning of our Order of Worship.  Why do we do what we do in worship? What intentions guide our ordering of worship?

Worship, Mission, and the Möbius Strip

Matt’s message is rooted in Acts 17.22-31 and the image of a Möbius strip.  Ruth Myers, a professor of liturgy and worship at Church Divinity School of the Pacific, introduced the Möbius strip in a class on Missional Worship at the Graduate Theological Union.  Matt draws upon the work of Dr. Myers to outline ways of thinking about how worship and mission relate.  How does worship relate to mission for you?

No partiality. Really?

Matt’s message is rooted in Acts 10 and the conversion & faith of Peter. How will we be transformed to see God’s boundary crossing love that shows no partiality? How will we come to the table to weave our hearts with others as we break bread? How will these tranformations shape the ways we practice our faith in the world?

Yes to the Mess

Matt’s message  focuses on Acts 2 and concludes our worship series on the book of acts and Jazz.

Comping

Matt’s message is rooted in Acts 6.1-7.  How might God be calling us to accomany the musicians around us?  What might we learn about growing in faith from the leading and following required by jazz musicians?

Jam Sessions

Linda’s message is rooted in the story of Lydia from chapter 16 in the book of Acts and the importance of jam sessions in jazz music. Part 5 in our worship series on Acts and jazz.

Even Them? Even Them!

Matt’s message is rooted in Acts 11.1-18.  What constraints do we need in our lives in order to be most free?  Matt’s message explores the way Peter navigated the religious rules of his day in ways that allowed him to see God’s love could be “even for the Gentiles.” How might the three rules of John Wesley (Do good. Do no harm. Stay in love with God.) lead to freedom in our lives?

Experimenting

Linda’s message is rooted in Acts 9.36-43.  How might we embrace errors en route to learning as we grow in faith?

Finding the One

Matt’s message is rooted in the conversion of Saul in Acts 9.1-20.  Who are the “musicians” who come alongside us in our times of transformation and conversion? Who has given us a hand? Who helps us to find the one?

Take a Knee

This is the first week in our seven-week worship series on the book of Acts and jazz.  Matt’s message is rooted in Acts 5.27-32. The early church had to improvise following the death and resurrection of Jesus. What plans do we follow? How do we improvise when the plans go awry? How might we learn to take a knee?

Pentecost

Our celelbration of Pentecost is rooted in Acts 2.1-21 and the Afrobeat music of Fela Kuti and the hip hop of Agape (Dave Scherer).  How are you conspiring with God and your neighbors to transform the world?
