Refugee Welcome Update

Six weeks ago on a cloudy and windy night, a plane landed late in the evening at Sacramento International Airport. A small family huddled together and walked through the airport gate to make a new home in Sacramento, 7,000 miles away from the one they once knew in Afghanistan. The family of five — Farhat, Adila and their three small children – are the second refugee family The Table has welcomed to the United States. Church volunteers worked around the…

Toward Sunday

We are so grateful for the power and beauty of our Baptism celebration yesterday. If one of the persons baptized is in your Kitchen Table, please invite them to reflect on the experience as your group gathers this week. We draw our worship series, Christian? It’s Complicated, to a close this Sunday by offering our Deep Commitments. Please prayerfully consider how you would like to deepen your commitment to God and our community of faith in the coming year. Outline for Christian? It’s…

Reaching

John Wesley defined Methodists during his life as people who ‘unite together to encourage and help each other in…working out their salvation, and for that end watch over one another in love’ (from A Blueprint for Discipleship p. 109). Who do you watch over in love?  How is your faith made deeper from this act? Who watches over you in love?  How has this love inspired your faith?

I wonder

This scene of Jesus and Peter on the water with the disciples looking on from the boat has been our image for wondering How Deep?  How Deep? are we are willing to go this year as we root our lives in Grace, grow in faith and reach in love?  As you go through your day today we be aware of the opportunities around you for reaching in love to others.  In your workplace, in your classroom, at home and in…

Practice

Soccer fever has arrived with the first match of the World Cup.  Millions of us will be watching players run, slide, kick, and endure injury to reach their goal between now and July 13 when the new champion is crowned. One thing to notice is how the teams perform on the field.  Coaches and trainers provide opportunity to practice but clearly players must take responsibility for their own growth as well.  At The Table we hope that our Worship, Blueprint…

Toward Sunday

Worship this Sunday will invite us to reflect upon the relationship of worship to mission through the image of the möbius strip.  We often think of worship as separate from mission.  This week’s worship will offer an alternative to this thinking. Outline for Missio Dei May 18:  Worship & The Mission of God (Acts 17.22-31) May 25:  Meaning & Purpose of Worship (Acts 17.22-31) June 1:  Understanding the Parts of Worship (Acts 17.22-31) June 8:  Pentecost Celebration.  Worship as Hospitality…

Toward Sunday

We begin a new worship series this week called Missio Dei, Missio Dei is Latin for “the mission of God.”  In this series we will explore the meaning of worship and wonder about how worship relates to mission. Followers of Jesus have often separated worship from mission (or reaching in love as we tend to call it).  In this series, we will reflect more deeply on the interrelatedness of worship and mission (on being rooted in Grace and reaching in love).…

Local food literacy

There are many ways to become informed about food literacy.  Here is link to California Food Literacy to learn more. and a video regarding a local ranch that is reaching in love even as it expands its business in our area.

Give Thanks.

“To those who have hunger, give bread.  To those who have bread, give hunger for justice.”

Reaching In Love

We will join thousands of people tomorrow as we reach in love to feed others.  The yearly Run To Feed the Hungry in Sacramento is the largest in the nation according to a piece we heard on NPR this week.  Close to 30,000 will run, walk, stroll and dance by The Table at Central UMC on Thanksgiving morning.  If you would like to join our team you may still sign up here.  Meet at the church by 8 a.m.  If…
