During Advent, the time for the desperate and usually losing attempt to save Christmas from consumerism as its only meaning and expression, some Christians pray: “Father in heaven, the day draws near when the glory of your Son will make radiant the night of the waiting world. May the lure of greed not impede us from the joy which moves the hearts of those who seek him. May the darkness not blind us to the visions of wisdom which fill the minds of those who find him.” As ‘alternative celebrations,’ caroling and visitation, especially of the lonely, are revived. Commercial abundance is not foresworn, but redirected to those who actually need something. The idolatry of things is subverted by giving them away (Christmas: Festival of Incarnation, 120).
