Sermons on Micah

Micah

While conservative interpreters might believe that prophets were predictors and progressives tend to believe the prophets to be simply social advocates, Dr. Walter Brueggemann argues that the prophets were “emancipated imaginers of alternative.” Emancipated from the dominant thinking of their societies, the prophets imagined an alternative reality and invited listeners to join them in their commitment to that new reality. This four-week worship series in November at The Table will invite our community of faith to reflect upon the themes…

But I Say…

Linda’s message is rooted in Micah 6.8, Matthew 5.38-48, and Audrey Assad’s contemporary reworking of Julia Ward Howe’s 1862 Battle Hymn of the Republic. What new song is God calling us to sing?

Cannonball

Matt’s message is rooted in Micah 6.8 & Matthew 5.21-37. The salty, light people of God are hanging around the edges of the pool, dipping their toes in the water, when Jesus cannonballs into the deep. Once he has their attention, Jesus calls them deeper into creatively, vulnerably, and honestly responding to the conflicts in which they are swimming.

Micah

Linda’s message on Micah encourages our community of faith to make this short passage, within this short book, part of our library as we return to the basics of doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God.

Controversy

Matt’s message is rooted in Micah 6: 1-8. In this chapter, God brings from the shadows into the light a great controversy with the people. What does the Lord require? We look back at the prophet Micah to discern how God might call us today to doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God.

Guns & Gun Violence

Matt’s message puts guns & gun violence on The Table and is rooted in Micah 4.1-4 and Joel 3.  Here is a link to Rev. David Lewicki’s blog on December 3, 2015 called We Are All Mass Murderers (And All Victims of It).  The clips of music in this podcast are both the original music of The Brilliance. The songs are called Run and Love Shall Overcome.

Peace

Linda’s message is rooted in Micah 5.1-5a. How might we open to the thin places of God’s deep peace as we prepare for the Advent of God’s new reality?
