The Landscape of the Heart

The Landscape of the Heart

Thomas H. Troeger writes,

Who would ever have picked Peter, that wavering and unreliable disciple, to deliver the first major sermon after the ascension of Christ?  Yet there he stands before a crowd enlightening and expanding the landscape of the heart:  “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17, quoting Joel 2:28 in modified form from Preaching while the church is under Reconstruction, 152).

What surprising moment has God given you lately?  How has your heart been “strangely warmed” and expanded so that you have been moved to speak of your faith out loud?

For the last five years I have been volunteering with Side- by-Side, a listening ministry with the homeless. Our diretor, The Rev. Linda Kelly-Baker, has accepted an appointment to Hope UMC, leaving the Listening Ministry to us voluteers. My heart is committed to the homeless and marginalized and have said I would help coodinate the volunteers so our morning Prayer and Reflection groups can continue for our guests at Friendship Park. My work with the homeless has been the “surprising” call on my life and has shaped or shall I say “reshaped” by ministry to the Body of Christ.
