Mission

The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

One commentary reflects on the relationship of our Scripture for this worship series (Acts 1.8) to the mission of the church in this way:

Jesus does not respond to speculation surrounding what is “not yet” but insists that his disciples engage in a mission “right now.” He points out that the disciples are not waiting for the Spirit within some apocalyptic time zone, where saving events come from heaven and erupt into human history in the “twinkling of an eye.” The apostles are to wait for a different redemptive reality. Jesus defines in a paradigmatic way the relationship between the Spirit’s outpouring and Israel’s restoration…he applies it to their vocation:  God’s reign will be reestablished among God’s people not by some apocalypse from heaven but by a mission on earth (New Interpreter’s Bible Volume X, page 42).

How do you feel about the mission of The United Methodist Church?  What might living out God’s mission on earth look like in your life?
