Toward Sunday

We gather weekly to worship as a way to root our lives in Grace, in God’s unconditional love.  We gather weekly in Kitchen Tables to grow in faith.  We do not always know what it will cost us to be part of such a community, but we learn along the way.  The disciples followed Jesus for quite some time and they, too, struggled to understand the cost of becoming a disciple.  Our worship this Sunday will be rooted in Matthew 16.21-28.  This passage begins the passion narrative in the Gospel of Matthew with instruction by Jesus on how the disciples are to live once he his gone.

“…the life called for is not based on a reasoned conclusion about how things are, inferred from observation or general principles, but on faith that something has happened that makes everything different.  To believe in Jesus as the Christ and to live accordingly means to reorient one’s life toward the good news that God has acted decisively and ultimately in Jesus, not that Jesus has some good advice on how to live.” from The New Interpreter’s Bible, vol 8. pg 352

Are there ways that you have experienced a “re-orientation” when you have joined a large community?

In what ways did you find that your initial understanding of what was expected of you, changed, once you were part of the group?
