Toward Sunday

We will hear some of Mother Theresa’s story in worship on Sunday, February 26.  Mother Theresa experienced a “dark night of the soul” as she rooted her life in Grace.  She was both broken open by experiences of God’s absence in her life.  The experiences of God’s absence were formational to her growing in faith. Mother Theresa followed Jesus to the cross and found a life of absolute generosity to those in need.

Mother Theresa found both challenge and comfort in the Psalms.  The Psalms were part of her daily life .

The Psalmist prays,

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;

   teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth, and teach me,

   for you are the God of my salvation;

   for you I wait all day long.

(from Psalm 25)

Mother Theresa often found herself waiting for God.  She longed to know God’s ways, to be led into God’s truth, to be taught of God’s paths.  Mother Theresa witnessed the world turn away from God’s children who suffered amidst poverty and disease.   Theresa broke open to new faithfulness in the midst of suffering.  Her life might best be encapsulated in the word:  generosity.

When have you been broken open by an experience that led you to be more generous?
