We will be joined in worship this Sunday by Agape (Dave Scherer). Worship will be rooted in Mark 8.31-38 and Dave’s life story. Here is a link to the Gospel reading.
The author of Mark’s Gospel writes:
34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?
In his piece called C.O.D. (Cost of Discipleship) David Scherer writes of his struggle:
I don’t want the cost of discipleship
Things that you asking me have got me straight tripping
If I do what you ask, how am supposed to make a living?
Sure I acknowledge you but I can’t really follow you
If I wanna follow you – you gobble every molecule
Why would you request that I sell what I possess
Leave my nets I confess that my life is now a mess
I thought if I said yes that my life would be breezy
I don’t know if I can do this, this ‘aint easy
When you think of losing your life for Jesus’ sake, what do you imagine?
I don’t wanna have to give up that car
I don’t wanna give up my big back yard
I don’t wanna give up trying to be a rap star
I should be ready to leave but that’s hard
I don’t want humility I want the limelight
I don’t wanna have to lose my life to find life
I don’t wanna walk the streets trying to shine light
But you tell me that’s the place where I can find Christ
What does costly discipleship look like to you?
How might you be broken open to a more costly discipleship this week?
Join us in worship this Sunday to hear the rest of this song and so much more….
