Sankofa

“the image of a bird looking back while moving forward”

We will be joined in worship Sunday by the musical group Sankofa. Anthony Coleman II, our musical director, named his group with intention.  The word Sankofa comes to us from the Akan language of Ghana and may be translated in english to mean “go back and get it”.  It is also represented by the Asante Adinkra symbol of a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg of the future off its back or holding an egg of the future in its beak. The bird symbol represents a proverb which translates “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.”  Their repertoire comes from the tradition of Afrobeat which is built on the rhythms of the past while building upon them today.

This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost at The Table. While we are aware that we stand in the place of our ancestors we also stand ready to move boldly into God’s unfolding future.

What might you need to bring with you from the past as you move into God’s future?
