In the coming weeks we will have 3 stand along worship celebrations.
The first of these will center on Knitting and faith.
Our Scripture this week is from the book of Psalms and is meant to inspire and to set the tone for our worship. In Psalm 139: 13-15 God is portrayed as a knitter.
13 For it was you who formed my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well.
Here is a definition of knitting: “Construction of a fabric made of interlocking loops of yarn by means of needles.” (from the Columbia Encyclopedia 6th ed. 2001)
Here is a definition of faith: “Believing in God.”
Both are simple. What is required is the practice and mastery of basic skills.
Knitting: Cast on, Knit, Purl, Cast off.
Faith: Do good, do no harm, stay in love with God.
Both are complex.
Take time this week to consider the hobbies that may inform your faith. While it may not be knitting, there are other ways in which people spend time that inspire faithful living. Fishing, photography, hiking, needlepoint, sewing, gardening are all actions that may teach us something about how we are in relationship to the Divine.
