Finding the words

“Most of us are not professional theologians, and for many Christians, almost all talk about God occurs when we are inside the church.  This is not surprising, since talking about God inside the church is often a lot easier and much less threatening than talking about God out in the world….The grooves of what to say and how to say it are already carved into the service of worship and into our memory.  But what about speaking of God in the rest of life?  How do we talk about God to our children?  Would we allow our faith to find voice when the tensions rise in a business meeting, when a friend comes back from the clinic with a troubling diagnosis, when we are at a parent/teacher meeting discussing school policy?…We are unsure how to put our faith into words in nonchurchy places, so we often just say nothing.”

(Thomas Long from Talking Ourselves into Being Christian p 7)

When was a moment you had thoughts about God or your faith this week but kept those thoughts to yourself?

What was it that kept you from sharing your faith out loud?
What might you need to feel or know or experience first that would help you feel more confident to share your faith out loud?
