Toward Sunday

Searching scripture is one of the ways we stay in love with God. To this end, we continue this week with our study of the writings attributed to John from the New Testament. We focused on the Gospel of John in worship last Sunday and we turn to the the Letters of John this week. We will conclude this three-week series with reflection on the Revelation of John.

Outline of Worship Series.

November 9,  2014 Gospel of John (John 3.16)
November 16, 2014 Letters of John (1 John 4.7-21)
November 23, 2014 Revelation of John (Revelation 22.1-7)
Invite your Kitchen Table to read 1 John 4.7-21.

The letters of John remind us that God is love, while also holding that love is not God.

Who are some of the people, if any, in your early life that taught you that God is love? How have you learned that God is love and what difference does this make to your daily life?

William Sloane Coffin once encapsulated this passage in a sermon: “The opposite of love is not hate; the opposite of love is fear.”  What would it mean to you if God is love and the opposite of love is fear?  How might this understanding of love open you to encountering God this week?
