Ash Wednesday, February 17, marks the beginning of the liturgical season of Lent in the Global Church. Traditionally the ashes we share are produced by the burning of palm branches used to celebrate Palm Sunday from the previous year. Because of global pandemic we did not have an opportunity to celebrate with actual palm branches last year. Some of you may remember that we created our own palms at home made from paper.
Like so much of what we’ve experienced throughout pandemic, Ash Wednesday will be different this year.
Cover crops grow with the sole purpose of returning to the soil to make the soil rich with nutrients for the coming planting season. Community volunteers planted cover crops at Table Farm many months ago and we’re just now beginning to turn the cover crops back into the soil for planting. As we move toward the season of Lent, we will prayerfully burn some of these cover crops which will then become the ashes we will use to mark the beginning of Lent together as we gather for online Ash Wednesday Worship via Facebook on February 17 at 6pm.
We are scheduling TWO times for individuals and families to pick up their ashes.***
- Sunday, February 7, between 11:00am – 1:00pm at The Table at Central UMC (5265 H Street Sacramento, CA 95819)*** and
- Tuesday, February 16, between 4:00pm – 5:00pm at Table Farm (23rd Street & Anita Avenue in Hollywood Park)***
***Please bring a small container and a spoon or something to “scoop” your ashes.
For out of the area friends we will MAIL ASHES to you. Please request ashes here by TUESDAY FEBRUARY 9:
