We begin our Lenten worship series, Sabbath Rest: Wendell Berry and the Sabbath Poetry of Lent, on this Ash Wednesday. Jesus challenges us to give, pray, fast, and value in ways that aren’t paraded out in public for all to see, but rather take place “in secret” – hidden even from ourselves (“do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing”). Jesus’ repeated emphasis here points to something essential about genuine love: it bubbles up from our innermost heart, not from any desire to impress or acquire status. Wendell Berry puts it this way: “The way of love leads all ways / to life beyond words, silent / and secret. To serve that triumph / I have done all the rest.” Worship online with thetable.live.
