Jesus was frustrated with the religious leaders of his day. Jesus charged, “They do not practice what they teach” (Matthew 23:3). He was concerned with the cumbersome burden of the rules, standards, directives, and laws the religious leaders in his day dictated. In the midst of all this, Jesus called his followers to the great commandment: “Love God and love your neighbor.”
We hope our way of practicing our faith at The Table echoes the great commandment of Jesus. We long to keep our process simple. We don’t want to burden one another with inane rules. In short, we want to love God and love our neighbors. We live into the great commandment by rooting our lives in grace, growing in faith, and reaching in love. As we practice these ways of living, we are shaped to give generously.
This week, Reverend Linda Loessberg-Zahl will share a message rooted in Isaiah 58:5-9. In this scripture, Isaiah challenges the Judeans, The Table, and all of us to put our piety into practice – in our church and community, by working for justice and the liberation of the oppressed, and providing shelter, clothing and food for those without resources. Isaiah promises that when we move from criticism of others to compassion we will be filled with the light and presence of God.
