Refugee Welcome Update

Spring is full of hope and the promises of new beginnings. During this Lenten season, we anticipate Christ’s resurrection as we study what came before Easter:  40 grim days in the desert and a sorrowful crucifixion. In hope, The Table is now anticipating the placement of our third refuge family, since we were notified of their arrival in Sacramento this week—almost 40 days to the day after the Jan. 27 executive order on immigration restrictions was signed. Hope springs eternal.…

Refugee Welcome Update

Six weeks ago on a cloudy and windy night, a plane landed late in the evening at Sacramento International Airport. A small family huddled together and walked through the airport gate to make a new home in Sacramento, 7,000 miles away from the one they once knew in Afghanistan. The family of five — Farhat, Adila and their three small children – are the second refugee family The Table has welcomed to the United States. Church volunteers worked around the…

Toward Sunday

We’re so grateful for the many people who helped welcome unhoused guests to The Table this week. We’ll now begin a new worship series called Life Together. The title of our series is taken from a book by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor who led a resistance movement during the rise of Hitler and the Nazi regime. Worship over the next two months will invite and challenge us to consider what costly discipleship might look like at this moment in…

We have a number of needs for Winter Sanctuary. If you have not already done so, please consider signing up to work for a shift. We particularly need  folks for setting-up from noon – 3:00 pm each day and for clean-up on January 1 from 6:00 – 9:00 am. Winter Sanctuary is a powerful way to celebrate the birth of God in an ancient alley by welcoming unhoused guests with hospitality and shelter from December 25 – January 1. Here is a link to…

Toward Sunday

We shift this week to a four-week Advent worship series called Take Me To The Alley. Our worship series will be rooted in the lectionary, an ancient collection of appointed readings from Scripture, from the Gospel of Matthew. We’ll have a number of ways to Reach in Love as we move toward Christmas this year at The Table. Our Christmas Offering will go to support an organization called Community Against Sexual Harm (CASH). CASH aims to be a picture of hope…

Toward Sunday

This is our final week in our four-week worship series on troubling texts from the Bible.  We have chosen stories from the Hebrew scripture which are often neglected because of the difficulty of the content.  Our hope is to wrestle with these stories and see what meaning may lie hidden beneath the difficult circumstances of the women’s lives that are depicted.   This week our worship will focus on the story of Jephthah’s Daughter (Judges 11:29-40). OUTLINE: Closer Readings of Troubling…
