Prayer and Fasting

Our worship series, Staying in Love with God, continues this week with reflections on Prayer and Fasting.

John Wesley wrote in A Plain Account of Christian Perfection,

Whether we think of; or speak to, God, whether we act or suffer for [God], all is prayer, when we have no other object than [God’s] love, and the desire of pleasing [God].

All that a Christian does, even in eating and sleeping, is prayer, when it is done in simplicity, according to the order of God, without either adding to or diminishing from it by…choice.

Wesley reminds of the connection between prayer and fasting in When You Fast:

Fourthly, let us always join fervent prayer with fasting, pouring out our souls before God, confessing our sins, humbling ourselves under [God’s] mighty hand, laying open before [God] all our needs, all our guiltiness and helplessness. This is a time for expanding our prayers, both in behalf of ourselves and of others. Let us now grieve over the sins of our people; and cry aloud for the Church, that the Lord may build her up…Thus, we may observe, the [people] of God, in ancient times always joined prayer and fasting together; likewise the Apostles, in all the instances cited above; and even our Lord fasted and prayed.
