Toward Sunday

We continue our three-week worship series this coming Sunday called A NEW YOU (in just 400,000 hours). The series invites reflection on practicing faith by rooting our lives in Grace, growing in faith, and reaching in love.  We will focus this week on growing in faith.

Our reading for this week is from John 1.43-51. Here is a link to the text.

Philip “finds” Nathanaell and invites him to “come and see” Jesus the son of Joseph from Nazareth.  Who are some of the people who have invited you to come and see Jesus throughout your life?  How did they invite you?  When did the invitation “work” and when did they “fail”?

Similarly, who are some of the people you have invited to come and see Jesus throughout your life?  How did you invite them?  When did the invitations “work” and when did they “fail”?

When told of Jesus, Nathanael asks, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  Philip replies, “Come and see.”  What might this exchange have to teach us about inviting people to grow in faith?  How else might Philip have replied?  What might the significance be of Philip’s reply?

I think this is a great story about witnessing. I think we all, need to be more open to letting God help us bring new people to his Table at Central UMC, to learn how to be Rooted in his Grace, Grow in Faith, and see the many ways that we Reach in Love.
